Almost every person who comes to see me about making a change in behavior, when asked: “what behavior do you want to change with hypnosis?” they say I want to stop smoking; or I want to lose weight; or I want to get into and stick with an exercise routines:
I want to get rid of my stress; or I want to stop drinking; or I want to have a better relationship with my spouse, my children, my co-workers…. If wanting determined a person’s behavior I would be out of a job!
I admonish my client to change: “I want to change my behavior” to “I choose to change my behavior.”
As far as research can determine, only us human beings have the ability to consciously choose our actions and to choose how to respond to what is happening around us. All of the other creatures respond to their instinctual or their conditioned behavior.
If we are going to make a change in our behavior we must first of all choose how we want to be and then choose to take the action that brings us the desired end result benefits that we do want; or choose to stop taking the actions that have been bring consequences that we don’t want. It isn’t the wanting that produces a change in behavior it is the choosing to take the action that results in the desired benefits.
Hypnotherapy can help you do both: take the action that produces positive results or stop engaging in actions that result in negative consequences… by choice.
